Review | The Ordinary High Adherence Silicone Primer

A few weeks ago I reviewed the Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 from The Ordinary (you can find it here).  I was super impressed with this and have even bought another one so I don’t run out. I also had purchased this primer, but wanted to give it a fair go before writing my review and I just hadn’t had time to test it out thoroughly.

The Ordinary High-Adherence Silicone Primer

Company claims: ‘This advanced primer blurs imperfections, helps makeup last longer, and lends the skin a matte finish. It can also be used alone as a non-greasy hydrator that reduces the look of pores, fine lines, and uneven texture.’

Packaging:

The packaging is similar to the rest of their range, sleek and simple, but is in tube form with a full grey background and the simple black writing. The tube is great, no chance of it breaking and you can throw it in your makeup bag. There is 30 mls of product which is a good amount of product especially for the price of $12.80.

Product:

The product is a thick white cream texture that rubs in easily. It is very hydrating, I would say more than most primers I have tried. Being an oily skinned girl I found I needed to let this soak and settle before applying my foundation otherwise my foundation separated a little on my nose. It also didn’t work when I used my ASAP moisturiser before applying this primer. I ended up with these weird white marks all over my face and I had to wash it off and start again. So it did take me awhile to try it again as I was worried how it would go.

But I have found a rhythm with it and it has been working well. I apply it before I do anything else. Then my brows, eyes and then base. This gives it time to settle in. I only apply my The Ordinary Hyaluronic 2% + B5 serum followed by ASAP vitamin C before applying the primer. This has been great as a base and because it is hydrating I don’t feel like I need a moisturiser as well which is good considering it is winter. Not so sure it will work in Summer for me though. I will have to wait and see.

L to R: The Ordinary High-Adherence Silicone primer, Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer, Mecca Cosmetica Soft Focus Primer and L’Oreal Nude Magique Blur Cream

Testing:

I have tried this product with a variety of foundations to give it a good test range. I even decided this week to try the primer on one side of my face and a different on on the other side of my face. I stuck to the same foundation each day so that it was an even playing field.

The combinations that I tried:

  1. Left Side: Mecca Cosmetica Soft Focus Smoothing Primer with Right Side: The Ordinary:- My foundation went on the same with both sides. I couldn’t really see a difference in application. After 8 hours of wear I can’t really tell any difference between the sides. There is no obvious breakdown of foundation, there is a little bit of shine but it is the same on both sides and I would’t say one side is more blurred than the other.
  2. Left Side: Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer with Right Side: The Ordinary:- Foundation applied the same on both sides so no difference in application. No obvious difference once my face was set and finished. After 8 hours of wear both sides still looked the same. No difference as far as I could tell and my makeup held well on both sides.
  3. Left Side: L’oreal Nude Magique Blur Cream primer with Right Side: The Ordinary:- This L’oreal primer is coloured rather than white and feels thicker going on. However still no difference in the application of my foundation. There is a slight difference in the blurring aspect with this one.  My left side (L’oreal) looks a little more burred or slightly smoother where I have texture. My foundation has still lasted 8 hours of wear with no obvious signs of difference between the two.

Final thoughts:

The Ordinary Primer was a little difficult to begin, but I think silicon primers can often be tricky to work with. Once I figured out to let it settle in before applying my foundation and to not use a moisturiser under it, I found it worked well every time.

Using it half half on my skin was a real eye opener. It performed as well as any of my more expensive primers. I will be curious how it holds up in Summer as we have high humidity here and being oily skinned everything turns into an oil slick. This will be something I will try again then.

The price is great and the quality is there. All in all, I think it is a great product and I will be continuing to use it.  Have you tried it? I would love to know your thoughts.

  1. I’ve used this one too but I prefer the High-Spreadability Fluid Primer as my skin tends to be dry rather than oily.
I have had to persevere with some products too but I’m glad that in the end, it worked out for you and performed as well as higher priced primers.
