Hit or Miss | The Ordinary Coverage Foundation

I finally have it in my hot little hands! I know it is old news but The Ordinary Coverage Foundation was such a hyped up product when it was released. Everyone wanted them as they were so cheap and everyone said it was amazing. This created a huge sellout and fast! I really want to give it a go. Their website gives you the option of being emailed when they come in. So when my email came through that they were back in stock I didn’t wait. I jumped on and ordered it straight away. It was here within a week!

I wanted to give this foundation a really good going over. Not just a one day wear test. I thought I would try it with a few different primers, setting powders and even some setting sprays. I thought this would be the best way to give it a really thorough honest review. My usual day starts with my makeup being on by 6.30 am and I get home from work by 3 pm. This gives me an 8 1/2 hour wear time to see how it holds up.

I wasn’t sure what colour to buy so I purchased two. I used Wayne Goss’s video as a guide to pick my colours. I went with 2.1Y (yellow tone) and 2.0N (neutral tone). I am usually more on the yellow side, but I couldn’t get a 2.0Y as they were not in stock so went with the neutral. 2.1 was really dark and 2.0 was really light. Looks like I will need to mix the two together.

Website Claims:

‘The Ordinary Coverage Foundations are full-coverage formulations available in a comprehensive shade range across 21 shades. These foundations contain higher pigment levels than our Serum Foundations but still offer a smooth finish that avoids the heavy makeup look that can make skin appear more aged. The texture is that of a lightweight, non-oily cream.’

Packaging:

The packaging is very minimalistic. The bottle it plastic, which would be great for travel. It also has a pump which I love. The only downside is that pump is a matte finish and this makes it so easy to mark or stain. You will see in most of my pictures the mark left from some of the foundation and no matter how hard I cleaned it, it would not budge and showed up every time in my photos. This annoys me a little and is not something a blogger wants for her photos. Yes I could photoshop this out for a perfect look, but I wanted you to see how easily it marks so chose to leave it in on some of these photos.

Application for all three days:

I decided to stick with my usual foundation application method. I thought this would be best to help me compare the finish to other foundations I wear regularly. With my textured skin I find my foundation looks its best stippled with my nude by nature buffing brush. I then add a second layer, in the areas that I need a little more coverage, with my damp beauty blender and blend everything out. I feel this helps fill in the texture while giving me a good even coverage.

Day one, Tuesday:

Products used:

  • Primer: Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer
  • Powder: Mac Studio Fix NC35
  • Setting Spray: Gerard Cosmetics Slay all Day

The Ordinary Coverage Foundation 2.1Y

Thoughts…

Initial Application: This combination is my holy grail with my usual foundations, so thought it was the one to start with. The first layer of foundation went on nicely. The second layer blended well with the first. I feel like this is more of a light to medium (swaying more on the light side in my opinion) coverage wise. I am feeling like it is more of a dewy finish rather than matte.

After 8 hours of wear: I felt like it wan’t holding up as well as I would have liked. It is looking a little shinny and starting to break up on my chin and around my nose. In a way it looks cakey on my chin as well if that makes sense. I haven’t touched up during the day at all (I rarely need to). With other foundations I do usually have some oil/shine by this time of the day. Today, I wouldn’t say I am any more shiny than I was this morning, just not looking like it is holding together very well.

Day Two, Wednesday:

Products used:

  • Primer: The Ordinary High Adherence Silicon Primer (review can be found here)
  • Powder: Too Faced
  • Setting Spray: None

I thought the most logical combination would be their primer as a base. I would expect that this should be the best combo out of all of them. I also decided to not use a setting spray to see if this makes any difference.

Thoughts…

Initial Application: I am really not liking this foundation today. I just don’t feel like the finish is as…well…flawless as my usual foundations. I am also feeling a little like it might be oxidising. I will see how it goes after a few hours of wear today. It blended well and sat nicely over The Ordinary High Adherence Silicon Primer, but that was to be expected.

After 8 hours of wear: The foundation still wasn’t overly oily. I looked glowy/dewy, but not oily. I used some blotting paper to see if there was any excess oil and there was some but nothing dramatic. I then tried touching up with my Rimmel Stay Matte Powder but I wasn’t really impressed with how it looked. It just wasn’t looking fresh or, well, nice. Overall, the foundation was still there, but I didn’t feel I could powder up and head out again. If I was going somewhere I would be taking it all off and starting again.

The Ordinaray Coverage Foundation Reveiw

Day Three, Thursday:

Products Used:

  • Primer: Rimmel Stay Matte Primer
  • Powder: Mac Studio Fix NC35
  • Setting Spray: Gerard Cosmetics Slay all Day

Initial Application: I had mixed both colours together the first two days as I felt one was too dark the other too light. However, I was feeling that the foundation was oxidizing so much on previous days. I was just too dark by the end of the day. So I thought today I would just go with the lighter one on its own hoping to see if it oxidized at all. I applied it the same but used the Rimmel Stay Matte Primer to see how that worked. Everything blended well and looked fine.

Before I left for work, a friend dropped in. I asked her opinion on how it looked. She said it looked nice but it was a lot more glowy/dewy than normal. The foundation did oxidize a little but not dramatically. So I felt like I looked a little lighter than I would prefer. But nothing drastically scary.

After 8 hours wear: I think I looked my worst today. I just wanted to get it off by the end of the day. I think I looked like a hot mess. The fact that is was a little lighter than I prefer didn’t help me either. My shine was getting to me as well. It was way more than I normally would have at the end of the day and I felt like the coverage was not enough for my liking. I couldn’t wait to wash it off.

The Ordinary Coverage Foundation Review

Thoughts….

Hmmm, This will be my last day wearing this I think. I am really not loving it. I am not getting the ‘flawless’ look I am able to achieve with other foundations. I feel like my texture and pores are more noticeable than normal.  It is definitely a lighter coverage than what I usually wear and even with a second layer, it did not give me the coverage I usually like. The dewy finish was not for me either. I am a matte girl through and through. When you are oily skinned, dewy is not a desired look. It just looks like you fell into an oil pit. That is just not my idea of attractive.

Final Thoughts…

Overall, I guess you could say it held up fairly well over the 8 1/2 hours of wear. I think it worked best with The Ordinary High Adherence Silicon Primer. Maybe this would work better for dry skin or anyone that is maybe combo and likes a dewy look. It just wasn’t ticking any boxes for me. I am quite disappointed as I had high expectations for this one. Especially after Wayne Goss raved about it in one of his videos. But it just wasn’t the foundation for me.

Have you tried this one? I would love to hear what you thought of it. If you liked it what skin type are you? And maybe if you have any tips that worked for you let me know. x
