e.l.f. Cosmetics – Worth the Hype?

My makeup collection has a very mixed bag of brands.  I wouldn’t like to say I am a snob with makeup, but I am fussy on the quality and quantity of the products I use. There are so many different brands out there with different price levels and often the quality reflects the price – but not always. I often choose the middle of the road products on most occasions. Don’t get me wrong, I do have and use drug store products on a regular basis but they don’t always offer the options and colours that mid – high range brands do. So  I do  find that I love the brands that are not usually found in your local chemist but not top of the range either as I cannot justify the price of these either.

One of my gripes with drug store brands is they often have less product, so you are still paying the same (if not more) for them if you work it out at a cost per ml/oz. The drug store brands are however stepping up their game with options and quality, which is great!

Before Christmas I decided to road test a few e.l.f. products.  Everyone raves about them and they are an extremely affordable brand of makeup. In Australia they can be found in Kmart but of course they are always packaged with no testers available in store and the products often mentioned on you-tube or reviews never seem to be the ones in my local Kmart.

img_6074Whilst writing my reviews I like to link websites associated with the product so you are able to have a look with one easy click. So to my excitement I have just discovered e.l.f. have an Australian website!!  Their shipping is also awesomely priced with standard Shipping on orders under $60 – $8 and orders over $60 – FREE!!!  Oh this may be dangerous!

So back to the review of the e.l.f. products I have been testing.

e.l.f. brush shampoo – Their website states: ‘For a flawless looking application every time. Washes away dirt, makeup, oil and debris from your brush while conditioning the hair to provide a clean and soft application.  Gentle and crafted for daily use.’

For the price of $8.00  I wasn’t overly thrilled. The bottle contains 4.10 fl. oz (120ml), is made from a hard plastic and has a flip top. I found it a pain to use as there was no pump so when I am cleaning heaps of brushes I had to stop and grab the bottle to get more cleaner.  This just made cleaning a longer, drawn out and even messier process.

It definitely cleans your brushes, but I think I will stick to my baby shampoo which has a pump and is 500ml for under $10!  and works like a charm.

e.l.f. eye shadow brush – This brush does not appear on their website but I did find it on the K-Mart website.  On here it is described as ‘Specially sheered brush tip absorbs the perfect amount of eye shadow and provides long lasting colour saturation. The comfort curved brush contours the eye with natural gliding strokes for easy and accurate eye shadow application. All e.l.f. professional makeup brushes have been designed and tested by our professional team of makeup artists. Each brush has been ergonomically designed to fit perfectly into your hand and facilitate a flawless finish with every application.’

This brush was $3.00 and I LOVE it!  I use it for smoking out my lower lash line and also on the lid.  I loved it so much I ended up buying a second one!

e.l.f. Contouring Blush & Bronzing Powder –  Their website states: ‘Create a healthy and natural glow all year long. The Blush highlights the cheeks to add a flush of color, while the Bronzer accents and contours cheekbones for beautiful definition.’

It comes in three different colour options: FiJi – Matte, St Lucia and Turks Caicos. I could only find the St Lucia in our Kmart so this was the one I grabbed.  Looking at the colours in the palette it has a sparkle to it and does look a little chunky but doesn’t seem to go on that way. There is a lot of fallout when getting the product on the brush but this does not affect the overall product once applied.

The packaging itself looks exactly like Nars, and I mean EXACTLY!  Sleek and gorgeous!

For $8 this product is great!  The pigment isn’t heavy but it is definitely buildable. I would really love to try the other two colour options especially the Matte one as I do prefer a Matte bronzer.

I guess with every brand there are some hits and misses, this is to be expected. Is there any e.l.f. products you use and love and think I need to try? Let me know in the comments. xx
